Mary Kathlyn Cochran Propst, 89, wife of the late Harold R. Propst, entered into her heavenly home on Friday, February 4, 2011 in Okeechobee, Florida at the Hamrick Home, Hospice of Okeechobee. She was a long time resident of Kirksville. Upon Harold’s death in November, 2000, she moved to Memphis, Tennessee and then on to Florida to live with her children.
Born in Harris, Missouri, November 8, 1921, Mrs. Propst was the daughter of Cash and Myrtle Jessee Cochran. She graduated from Kirksville High School in 1939 and went on to graduate from Kirksville Beauty College. Mary and Harold were married July 28, 1940 and moved to Norfolk, Virginia where Harold worked during WWII. Their eldest son, Jerry Paul, was born there. After the war, the family returned to their farm east of Kirksville in the Bullion community where their daughter, Rebecca Cheryl, and youngest son, Robert Cochran were born.
Mrs. Propst was an active member of the community teaching Bible school, 4-H cooking and sewing classes and was a Bullion School PTA and Bullion Methodist Church member. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning, helping neighbors, caring for many members of her family and listening to gospel music. Most of all, she enjoyed her children, grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Her unconditional love and warmth will be forever missed by all who knew and loved her.
Preceding Mrs. Propst in death were her parents, husband Harold, son Jerry, two older brothers Noel and Joseph Cochran, and one younger brother Jamie Cochran.
Survivors include daughter, Cheryl Shahan and husband Jack, Okeechobee, FL, son, Robert Propst and wife Kendra, Memphis, TN; four grandchildren: Chantel Propst Gaus and husband Darin, Ewing, MO, Kristen Taylor Watts and husband Sterling, West Plains, MO, Travis Taylor, Hannibal, MO, and Laura Taylor Vose and husband Bryan, LaPlata, MO; four great grandchildren: Alexis and Zayne Gaus, Lindseigh Gaus Griesbaum and husband Andrew, all of Ewing, MO, and Kylie Beck, West Plains, MO. Mrs. Propst is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Grover, Colorado Springs, CO, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday (February 10, 2011) at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home with Reverend Darrell Draper officiating.
Visitation will take place from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the
Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home
