Leonard Johnson
Leonard Johnson, 95, of Unionville, MO, passed away at the Putnam County Care Center in Unionville, MO, on Thursday, March 3, 2011. He had been a resident at the Care Center for about a year.
Leonard Miller Johnson was born in Newtown, MO, on September 25, 1915, the son of Alfred Webster and Louisa (Miller) Johnson, who preceded him in death. On June 6, 1940, he married Rita Bonebright in Unionville and she survives in Unionville.
After working at different jobs around the country, Leonard settled into a long and successful career as a businessman in Lucerne, MO. He co-owned and operated a home heating oil business and service station called Smith and Johnson Oil Company which then became Oakley and Johnson Oil Company. This business served citizens of western Putnam and Sullivan County for over 40 years.
Leonard was a longtime member of the Newtown Masonic Lodge in Newtown, MO, as well as a longtime member of the Lucerne Christian Church. He and Rita moved their membership to the Unionville Christian Church in 1995 when they moved to Unionville. Leonard also belonged to the Unionville Country Club where he was an avid golfer, having won more club championships than anyone in club history. He was also a devoted fan of the Putnam County Midgets, regularly attending all sporting events, especially football. Leonard had a wonderful sense of humor and a very affable personality.
In addition to his wife, Leonard is survived by two daughters, Louise McBain and life partner Jack Bohmbach of Cincinnati, IA; and Linda Steele and husband Carl of Westfield, IN. Surviving grandchildren are Brian Harrington and special friend Cindy of Las Vegas, NV, and children Dusty and Andy; Mike Steele and wife Vicky and their children Christopher, Michael, and Zachary; Becky Drlik and husband Scott and their children Grant, Morgan, and Brady; and Joe Steele and his children Jessica, Connor, Sophia, and Lillie, all of Westfield, IN.
Others who preceded Leonard in death are brothers Wade, Charlie, Claude, Gordon, and Russell Johnson and sister Pauline Berry.
Funeral services for Leonard Johnson will be at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, at 10:00 am on Monday, March 7, 2011. Visitation will be on Sunday, March 6, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.
Memorials for Leonard Johnson are suggested to the PC Café and Resource Center, the Putnam County Care Center, and Hospice of NE Missouri, and may be entrusted with Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.
