Don Myre
Don Myre, 77, passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield, MO, on Thursday, March 10, 2011. He had been a patient there for about five days.
Donald Francis Myre was born in Pontiac, MI, on April 1, 1933, the son of Francis Emmanuel and Ferne Madeline (Course) Myre, who preceded him in death. Don was reared in Michigan where he graduated from High School. He entered the United States Army in April of 1953 and was honorably discharged in April of 1955. On April 10, 1955 he married Dorothy Smith in Unionville, MO, and she survives.
Don and Dorothy lived in Michigan after the service where don worked briefly for General Motors before becoming a mail carrier with the United States Postal Service. In 1969 they bought the Tastee Freeze in Unionville and operated that until Don and Dorothy opened Don’s Hickory House in Unionville in 1972. They owned and operated that until they sold it in 1986 and moved to St. Louis to work at the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home. Don and Dorothy retired in 1998 and returned to Unionville where they had continued to maintain a home. Don worked at Luscan Funeral Home and Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville where he was a valued member of our team. Don and Dorothy moved to Ellisville, MO, in December of 2010 to be near family.
Don was a man of boundless energy. He and Dorothy were active in helping start Baptist churches in Michigan. He was always active in church work and was presently a member of First Baptist Church in Unionville. Don’s faith was an important part of his life. He also served on the Putnam County School Board and was a member of the Unionville Rotary and the American Legion Post #34, serving on numerous military honor guards. Don was an avid golfer and former member of the Unionville Country Club. Don had received a heart transplant in 1993 and the issue of organ donation was very dear to him. Don loved people and was well respected by all who knew him.
In addition to his wife, Don is survived by his son, Paul Myre and wife Cathy of Chesterfield, MO, and his daughter, Margaret Kiser and her husband Rick of Warsaw, MO. His seven grandchildren are Darren Kiser, Megan Kiser, Alli Myre, Andrea Kiser, Allison Doering, Michelle Doering, and Zach Myre. Four great grandchildren also survive as well as a brother, David Myre and wife Mary Lou, of Waterford, MI.
Don was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Myre and a sister, Ila Gene Gibbs.
Funeral services for Don Myre will be held at the First Baptist Church in Unionville, MO, on Sunday, March 13th, 2011, at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home on Saturday, March 12th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the Unionville Cemetery.
Memorials for Don are suggested to the First Baptist Church in Unionville or the Mid America Heart Transplant Society.
