Evelyn A. Pauley
On March 9, 2011, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, wrapped His arms around our mother and grandmother, Evelyn Pauley, and carried her to glory. She was 93 years of age. Born August 14, 1917, in Lake City, IA, Evelyn Alsie Doty was the daughter of Dorus V. Doty and Mertie May (Ellis) Doty-Crockett. At six months of age, the family moved to Tyler, MN, where she grew up and graduated from Tyler High School in 1936.
Times were hard, and Evelyn’s family lost their Minnesota farm during The Great Depression. The day after high school graduation, Evelyn and sister, Margaret, piled in the rumble seat of a 1926 Model T Ford and moved with her family to a farm south of Powersville, MO, for a new start. It was after the move to Missouri that she met and married her husband of almost fifty years, Dayton Pauley, who preceded her in death on April 15, 1989.
Dayton and Evelyn were married May 6, 1939, and settled in “the little house” north of Lucerne, MO. To this union five children were born: Mary Ann Burress (Johnny), Powersville, MO; John “Pat” Pauley (Linda), Independence, MO; Douglas Pauley (Sandi), Lucerne, MO; Margaret Quigley (Jerry), Unionville, MO and Ruth Bru (Gary), Lucerne, MO.
Evelyn is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren including: Tim Burress, wife, Michelle, and son, Dayton Burress; J.P. Pauley, wife, Shannon, and children, Paige and Tucker Pauley; Chad Pauley, wife, Mishelle, and daughter, Kyrsten Pauley; Mike Pauley, wife, Sylvia, and children, Nicolas, Sydney, and Jakob Pauley; David Pauley, special friend, Genia Graybill, children, Bailee Grace Pauley and Connor and Colton Graybill; Tisha Franklin, husband, Aaron, and children, Cameron Gittings and Skylar Franklin; Stacey Vestal, husband, Bobby, and children, Jaci and Jacey Vestal; Stefanie Duncan, husband, George, and children, Tristen and Alex Duncan; Sara Ingersoll, husband, Scott, and children, Kendall and Karlie Ingersoll; Scott Quigley; Shawna Read, husband, Ben, and children, Aurora, Evelina, Sophia, Earl, and Harvey Read; Mark Lupton and daughter, Bailey Lupton; Charlie Lupton, wife, Sarah, and children, Quincy Lupton and Hayden Gutcher.
Preceding Evelyn in death were her husband, Dayton; her parents, Dorus and Mertie (Ellis) Doty-Crockett; one son, John “Pat” Pauley, two sons-in-law, Johnny Burress and Gary Bru; three brothers, Glen, Harold, and Kenneth Doty; and two sisters, Thelma (Doty) Malcolm and Margaret (Doty) Pickens.
Evelyn and husband, Dayton, spent their entire married life of almost fifty years on their farm north of Lucerne, MO, in Putnam County. As a hard-working farm wife, mother, and grandmother, Evelyn spent many hours in the kitchen preparing delicious meals for her family, hay-hands, and occasional visitors. Countless loaves of hot breads, pies, cakes, cookies, and other main dishes were prepared in her cozy kitchen.
Dayton and Evelyn lived during an era in which farm resources provided the main source of livelihood for themselves and their families. Families lived, worked, and sometimes stayed on the farm for generations. To supplement the family food supply during the earlier years of marriage, Evelyn dressed chickens, milked cows, and tended three gardens and various fruit trees from which countless jars of vegetables and fruits were canned for her family. The family’s meat supply of beef and pork was also raised on their farm, from which Evelyn canned jars of meat and mincemeat. She also made lye soap which was used to wash a large family’s laundry, usually on Monday’s.
Evelyn loved her family, and one of her greatest joys was gathering everyone at home for family meals during holidays and other special occasions. Other favorite past-times included making beautiful quilts, watching old movies, and reading countless books. A strong work ethic, honesty, respect for others, and most important, a love for and belief in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, were instilled in her children and grandchildren throughout the years.
Evelyn received the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior over sixty years ago through the ministry of Lloyd Wilkes. Her Lord and Savior was a strength and comfort all these many years and her deep Christian faith was an inspiration to her family and others with whom she came in contact.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 12, 2011, at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home with Pastor Ken Lawson, Rochester, IL, officiating. Visitation was held one hour before the service. Memorials are suggested to the PC Café and Resource Center and/or Hospice of Northeast Missouri.
Music selections were provided by Aaron Franklin. Casket bearers were Tim Burress, Mike and David Pauley, J.P. and Chad Pauley, Scott Quigley, and Mark and Charlie Lupton. Interment was in the Powersville Cemetery.
Resurrection Power
…Our Savior once suffered and died for sin,
Though no one so righteous as He had been.
It seemed that the devil had sealed His doom
As they buried His body in Joseph’s tomb.
But what is this wonder that greets our eyes
As the rays of the third morning’s sun arise?
Behold, He is risen! The grave could not hold
The Author of Life; the Anointed of God!
And now the dead who have trusted His name,
Though sleeping in Jesus, will rise again,
With bodies more glorious than this flower
“Sown in weakness, but raised in power!”
