Helen Campbell

Helen Christine Gelbach Campbell 100 of Kirksville passed away on Saturday (April 9, 2011) at the Kirksville Manor Care Center.

The daughter of Floyd Buhl and Carrie (Humphrey) Gelbach, she was born on March 13, 1911 in Hurdland, MO. In 1933 she married Glen Shahan and to this union one daughter was born. In 1967 she married George C. Campbell who preceded her in death on October 5, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Russell Gelbach and wife Nina; a sister, Mildred Orwiler and husband Lester and a nephew, Stanley Gelbach.

She is survived by a daughter, Maridonna Knorr and husband Dr. Reynolds Knorr of Boca Raton, FL; a grandson, Drs. John Knorr and wife Laurie of Boylston, MA; a granddaughter, Jane Arellano and husband Dr. Stanley Arellano of Elk Grove, CA and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are a step daughter-in-law, Joan Campbell wife of step son Vernon Campbell (deceased), three step grandchildren and three step great grandchildren all of Preston, Iowa. She is also survived by a sister, Virginia Brooks of Louisville, KY; two nephews, Larry Gelbach and Anthony Brooks.

Mrs. Campbell attended the Hurdland Public School, and in 1938 was graduated from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College. Later she received a master’s degree from the same institution now Truman state University. She taught schools in Knox, Randolph and Adair Counties. She was an English teacher in the Ophelia Parrish Junior High School in Kirksville at the time of her retirement in 1967.

She was a former member of the Ann Haynes Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and is a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kirksville.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday (April 14, 2011) at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home with Reverend Richard Northcutt officiating. Music will be provided by Dianthe Cable organist. Interment will be in the Maple Hills Cemetery.
