Lewis Roberts Binford

Lewis Roberts Binford, age 79 of Kirksville, Missouri passed away Monday evening (April 11, 2011) at his home.

Lewis was born on November 21, 1931 in Norfolk, Virginia the son of Joseph Lewis and Eoline (Roberts) Binford. His marriage to Jean Mock produced two children, Martha Riley and Lewis Clinton. On June 29, 2002
in Roan Mountain, N.C. he was married to current wife Amber Johnson.

He is survived by his wife Amber, daughter Martha and her partner Kit Zimmerman both of Belen NM. He was preceded in death by his parents
and son Clinton.

Lewis was reared in Norfolk VA where he graduated from Maury High
School. He continued his education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, then served in the Army from 1952 to 1954 in part as an interpreter in Japan.

Later he graduated college at UNC Chapel Hill and received his PhD in Anthropology at the University of Michigan. He is widely recognized as one
of the most influential archaeologists of the 20th C.
Among numerous awards and professional honors, he was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and has had an asteroid named for him.

Lewis has requested to be cremated. There will be an open house at the family home Saturday, April 16th, 1-3 pm at 19544 Sunset Trail, Kirksville.
The family requests that memorial gifts be made to Hospice of Northeast Missouri, 201 S. Baltimore, Ste C, Kirksville, MO 63501.
