Dennis Hume, 63, passed away suddenly at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa, IA, on Sunday, August 7, 2011.
Dennis Eugene Hume was born in Muscatine, IA, on November 21, 1947, the son of Murl and Nellie (Hays) Hume. The family moved to Unionville, MO, when Dennis was a small boy. He grew up in Unionville, attended the Anders School, the Good Hope School, and then graduated from Unionville High School in 1965. He attended Indian Hills Community College in Centerville before enlisting in the United States Navy in April of 1967.
Dennis received his Electricians Mate rating in the Navy and served two tours aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hancock during the Vietnam Conflict. On August 16, 1969, Dennis married Peggy Grant. In 1972, their daughter, Michelle Lynn, was born.
Dennis was honorably discharged in 1973 after six years of service. He and his family moved back to Unionville where he worked for Summers Brothers in Unionville and later, Elliott Electrical in Centerville, IA. Dennis lived in Oskaloosa, IA for 15 years before settling in Ottumwa eight years ago. He worked as a Master Journeyman Electrician and was a member of the local Electricians’ Union. Dennis, a member of the NRA, loved to hunt, fish and go camping with his family. He was also an avid NASCAR racing fan. He had a special talent for photography and his favorite subjects were his family, especially his nieces and nephews.
Dennis is survived by his daughter, Michele Hume of Centerville, special friend, Vickie Horn and son Braden of Ottumwa, and his mother, Nellie Hume of Unionville. Also surviving are his siblings, Andy Hume of Unionville; Lois Brummer and husband Gene of Unionville; Peggy Kelley and husband Neal of Bozeman, MT; and many nieces and nephews.
Dennis was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services for Dennis Hume will be held at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, Unionville, MO, on Thursday, August 11, 2011, at 2:00 pm with visitation on Wednesday, August 10, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Pastor Kevin Collins will conduct the service with recorded musical selections Have You Ever Seen the Rain by CCR and Landslide by Stevie Nicks. Casket bearers are Jesse Knowles, Cody Turpin, Matt Brummer, Buzz Welch, Braden Horn, and Denny Brummer. Honorary bearers are Neal Kelley, Gene Brummer, Brian Brummer, Steve Golston, Larry Seals, and Steve Rouse. Interment will be in the Unionville Cemetery.
Memorials for Dennis Hume are suggested to the family and may be entrusted to Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.
