Emma Elizabeth Hunt

September 29, 1921 — October 7, 2011

Emma Hunt
Emma Elizabeth Hunt, age 90, of Unionville, Mo, passed away October 7, 2011 with her family by her side.
Emma was born on September 29, 1921 in Wamego, Kansas to Roscoe and Galena (Warnick) Poston. She attended elementary and high school in Kanopolis. However, because her father was transferred to Maryville, Mo., she graduated from Maryville High School in 1939. She then attended Northwest Missouri State Teachers College, now Northwest Missouri State University, from which she graduated in 1943. Emma paid her way through college by working as a cashier at the “Five and Dime” and with her jitterbug contest winnings.
With a Bachelor of Science degree, she began her first Home Economics teaching job at Unionville High School. On June 2, 1946, Emma married Charlton Shriner Hunt, who preceded her in death in 1971. Together they owned and operated the Hamms Beer Distributorship and the Hunt Ford Motor Company. Socially, she and Charlton actively participated in the El Kadir Shrine Club and Unionville Country Club. Emma returned to teaching at UHS and retired from education in 1986. Many of her students will remember her as they respectively called her, Ms. Emmy.
Emma enjoyed golfing, dancing, and playing cards. She especially enjoyed her family and friends whom she affectionately called “Doll.” Although she was a loyal “Midget” fan, she had adorned the black and gold of the Green City Gophers, and seldom missed any of her grandsons’ academic and athletic events.
Emma had a competitive and independent spirit and she did not give up on anything easily. She remained independent until a car accident in June, injuries from which ultimately took her strength and life.
Her husband, sisters-in-laws, brothers-in-laws, and parents preceded Emma in death. She is survived by her daughter, Laura Elizabeth Riddle and son-in-law, David Paul Riddle, two grandsons, Matthew and Michael Riddle of Green City, Mo., step-grandson, Jeremy (Mandy) Riddle of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and step-granddaughter, Stephanie (Bobby) Bowers of Kearney, Mo., and eight step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, October 9 at the Playle and Jones Funeral Home in Unionville, with Dr. Gregory Dickson presiding. Pallbearers were Matthew Riddle, Michael Riddle, Jeremy Riddle, Bobby Bowers, David Riddle, and Greg Dickson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children or Hospice of Northeast Missouri and may be entrusted to Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.
