Larry Shepherd
Larry Shepherd, 71, of Unionville, MO, passed away at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, MO, on Friday, November 18, 2011, after battling cancer for almost a year.
Larry Joe Shepherd was born in Hyden, KY, on June 11, 1940, the son of Elisha and Rebecca (Feltner) Shepherd, who preceded him in death. Larry was reared near Corbin, KY, and after school he worked in the timber and coal mining industry before joining the United States Army where he served as a cook for 11 years. Larry did three tours in Vietnam. He returned to the United States after receiving his honorable discharge and worked as a cook and baker. He then worked for 23 years as a pipe fitter with Fluer-Daniels out of Greenville, SC. This work took Larry all across the country.
Larry liked to squirrel and deer hunt and he liked to fish. He loved to read and study the Bible. Larry had an outgoing personality and loved to visit with people. He was a good story teller and had a good memory. He was a member of Stringtown Christian Church.
Larry married Regena Brown in Unionville, MO, on April 11, 2009, and she survives at home in Unionville. Also surviving are four sons, Joseph Shepherd of Bloomington, IL; Larry J. Shepherd of Corbin, KY; Gerald Shepherd of Corbin, KY; and Matthew Shepherd of Chillicothe, MO; and one daughter, Faith Myers and husband Curtis of Chillicothe, MO. A step-son, Eric Veach and wife Julie of Newtown and step-daughter, Janie Otto and husband Johnathon of Lucerne, MO, also survive as well as four grandchildren and six step-grandchildren. Five brothers survive, Johnny Shepherd of Corbin, KY; Marcus Shepherd and wife Barbara of Morganfield, KY; Bige Shepherd and wife Carolyn of Henderson, KY; Alvin Shepherd and wife Kathy of Corbin, KY; and Roger Shepherd and wife Sharon of Montgomery, AL; and two sisters, Wilma Wooton of Corbin, KY; Sirelda Brown and husband Daryl of Pine Knot, KY. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Others who preceded Larry in death are a sister, Thelma Smith; a brother, Claude Shepherd; and a grandson.
Funeral services for Larry Shepherd will be at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, on Tuesday, November 22, 2011, at 10:30 am. Visitation will be on Monday, November 21 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Interment will be in the Chapel Cemetery, north of Livonia, MO.
