Jerry Guffey, 69, of Unionville, MO, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home on Tuesday, January 10, 2012.
Jerry Joshua Guffey was born in Kirksville, MO, on August 23, 1942, the son of Clarence and Vera (Capps) Guffey who preceded him in death. He was raised in the Graysville area of Putnam County, attending rural schools in there. Jerry was married to Gloria Malisch in Belvidere, IL, in 1961 and they later divorced. Jerry was inducted into the United States Army in 1966 and served with an engineering battalion as a truck driver during the Viet Nam War. He was respected as a good comrade in arms. He was honorably discharged in 1968.
Even though Jerry was on permanent disability from his experience in Viet Nam, he worked as a car salesman for various businesses in north Missouri. Jerry owned and operated Martinstown Store for a while. His friendly and warm personality won him many friends and valued customers. Jerry was an easy and outgoing person who loved to visit and loved people. He was a loyal friend who could be counted on in all circumstances.
Jerry is not survived by any immediate family members, but close friend and cousin Carmita Guffey survives as well as good friend and neighbor Mark Enga. Many in Unionville and surrounding area counted Jerry as a good friend.
Funeral services for Jerry Guffey were at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, on Friday, January 13, 2012, with visitation the preceding evening. Services were conducted by Pastor Kevin Collins and musical selections “The Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art” were sang by Johnny and Carolyn Vincent. Good friend Dan Jenkins sang a selection at the cemetery. Casket bearers were Mark Enga, Nick Michael, Garry Thompson, Steve Wilson, Dan Jenkins, Greg Guffey, and Daniel Robbins. Military honors were conducted for Jerry at the cemetery. Interment was in the Rose Cemetery east of Unionville, MO.
