Carmelita B. (Moore) Slocum

Carmelita B (Moore) Slocum, 92, of Kirksville passed away March 15, 2012 at her home.

Carmelita was born on April 18, 1919 in Adair, Missouri, the daughter of Thomas William and Margaret Josephine (Nooning) Moore. She was a graduate of Baring High School with the class of 1937.

On June 25, 1942 she was united in marriage to Dale Bruce Slocum in Kirksville, who preceded her in death on March 18, 1983.

For most of their married life, they resided on their farm west of Baring, MO. In 1969 they moved to Kirksville where they rented rooms in their home to college girls for several years. Carmelita also worked for the Professional Style Shop and Kelly’s Furniture Store for several years. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society at both Saint Aloysius Church in Baring and Mary Immaculate Church in Kirksville. She was also a member of the Democratic Committee of Knox County for many years.

Carmelita is survived by two daughters, Cheryl (Larry) Hayes of Edina, MO and Joetta (Mark) Krueger of Kirksville, MO. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Beverly Hayes of Edina, MO, Annette (Cole) Mitchell of Macon, MO, Todd (Jennifer) Krueger of Kansas City, MO, Kelly (Lacy) Hayes of Edina, MO, and Nichole (Jamie) Krueger of Olathe, KS and great grandchildren, Amber (Shane) Clouse of Jefferson City, MO, Isaiah Prebe, Conner, Collin and Carrsen Hayes of Edina, MO, Wyatt, Garrett and Hayvin Mitchell of Macon, MO; her sister, Bernadine Barker of Kirksville and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dale, her parents William and Margaret, one sister, Mary Rose McGonigle and three brothers, Francis, Norbert and Robert Moore, four brothers and sisters-in-law, Alva and Alta Slocum, John and Flossie Dye, Cordie and Dorothy Slocum and Clyde and Maude Waite, and eight nieces and nephews.

Much of her life was spent sharing her home by helping raise many nieces and nephews, as well as caring for her father-in-law and then her mother.

Carmelita enjoyed cooking, gardening and her flowers. She especially enjoyed family gatherings and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved playing jokes and making her family laugh. She also loved playing games with her grandkid, especially dominoes. Family was the light of her life.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, March 17 ^th at 10:00 a.m. at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church with Father Chris Cordes presiding. Music will be provided by Nicole and Todd Krueger and Jim, Kyle and Laura Clark. Burial will be in Park View Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be Friday, March 16 ^th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Chapel with a rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mary Immaculate Catholic Church or Hospice of Northeast Missouri.
