Bob Smiley, 86, of Unionville, MO, passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA, on Monday, April 16, 2012.
Robert Leon Smiley was born north of Lemons, MO, on August 3, 1925, the son of Harley Orval and Alta Mae (Perkins) Smiley, who preceded him in death. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in both the Army and Army Air Corps. He married Kassie Banner on November 30, 1947 in Unionville, MO, and she survives at home.
Bob was a successful businessman having owned and operated Smiley Chevrolet-Olds in Milan, MO, and Smiley Real Estate of both Unionville and Milan and Smiley General Store & Propane in Lemons. He also served as postmaster at Lemons for nearly 30 years until the post office closed.
Bob enjoyed playing First Base in baseball and also coached Little League baseball for a number of years. He played Volleyball in the service. He enjoyed cars and driving fast, pushing the speed limit enough to earn a title as honorary patrolman. He was a member of the Lemons American Legion and the Milan Rotary Club.
Bob Smiley is survived by a son, Roger Smiley and wife Sandra of Milan, MO, and a daughter, Rita Kronberger and husband Jeff of Milan, MO. His grandchildren are Ryan Smiley and wife Amanda, Rustin Smiley and wife Stefanie, and Ritnee Smiley. His great grandchild is Rylan Smiley
Bob was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Audra Jo Smiley.
Funeral services for Robert Smiley will be at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, on Friday, April 20, 2102, at 10:30 am. Visitation will be Thursday, April 19, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the Unionville Cemetery, Unionville, MO.
Memorials are suggested to the Lemons Legion Community Building and may be entrusted with Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th, Unionville, MO, 63565.
