Randy Hopkins, 62, passed away peacefully at this home, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Randy D. Hopkins was born in Des Moines, IA, on July 12, 1949, the son of Joe and Mary (Collins) Hopkins, who preceded him in death. He graduated from Des Moines East High School and then joined the United States Army. After his honorable discharge in 1968 he continued to proudly serve for over 20 years in the Army Reserves, retiring at the rank of Sergeant. He married Virginia Henderson in Des Moines, IA, on May 10, 1975, and she preceded him in death on April 25, 2009.
Randy worked as an associate at Deluxe Check, Economy Forms and a number of other jobs before retiring and moving to Lake Thunderhead in Unionville, MO. Randy was a long time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Unionville, MO. He enjoyed the great outdoors and looked forward to the Iris blooming each spring. He loved to take the younger generation for rides on inner tubes on the lake and always enjoyed trying to throw them off into the water.
Randy is survived by a son, Rodney D. Hopkins of Norwalk, IA, one sister, “Nanna” Kay Schlenker and her husband Arnie of Unionville, MO; one brother, Jimmy Hopkins of Des Moines, IA; and step children Christine Stratton, Dan Henderson and Robert Henderson, all of Des Moines, IA. Several grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive.
A funeral mass for Randy will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Unionville, MO, at 10:30 am on Monday, May 21, 2012. Full Military honors will be provided by military service personnel from Ft. Leavenworth, KS. Interment will at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Unionville, MO.
