Paul Shumate
Paul Eugene Shumate (Poss), age 63, passed away Saturday, October 27, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield, Missouri, after gallantly battling Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
The son of David Frances and Wilma Blanche (Calhoun) Shumate, Paul was born October 24, 1949, in Kirksville, MO. He was united in marriage to Beth Allen on March 12, 1971, in Queen City, MO.
Paul is survived by his wife, Beth; one daughter, Melissa Steimel and husband, Nathan of St. Charles, MO; one brother, Larry Shumate and wife, Bethany of Fresno, CA; and three grandchildren: Elle, Ryan and Anna Steimel.
His parents and two brothers, John and Ben Shumate, preceded him in death.
Paul lived in Fowler, CA, during early childhood before returning to Queen City, MO, where he graduated from Schuyler R-I. He attended Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University) where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in education and a Master of Arts degree in counseling.
Paul taught history and physical education and coached at Schuyler R-I.
He was a guidance counselor in Eldon and Jefferson City, Missouri. He served as Juvenile Justice Specialist for the Department of Public Safety, Deputy Director for the Division of Professional Registration, Deputy Director for the Division of Aging, and Region VII Branch Manager for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). He retired in May 2012 due to failing health.
Paul was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson City, MO.
He received numerous awards for his service in State and Federal Government. Paul was a strong supporter of University of Missouri athletics and the St. Louis Cardinals. He coached girls’ ASA softball and also loved to golf and fish.
He was a proud father and grandpa.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 2, 2012, at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Kirksville, with Reverend Ryan Laughlin officiating.
Burial will be in the Queen City Cemetery in Queen City, MO.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., November 1, at the funeral home.
