Donald Hill, 92, passed away unexpectedly at the Putnam County Memorial Hospital in Unionville, MO, on Tuesday, December 4, 2012.
Donald Allen Hill was born in Pollock, MO, on June 15, 1920, the youngest child of Henry Allen and Lelia Maude (Bruce) Hill who preceded him in death. Donald married Evelyn Maxine Butler in Pollock, MO, on February 16, 1941 and she preceded him in death on July 25, 2003.
Donald and Maxine began operating the Hill Store in 1948 and continued until 1951. They moved the store to the farm on which they lived. Donald and Maxine moved to Ottumwa, IA, in 1953, after closing the store. Donald entered the USDA meat inspection service in 1954 in Ottumwa, IA, and was transferred to St. Joseph, MO, in 1956. He continued to work with the USDA in northwest Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska until his retirement in 1980.
Donald and Maxine returned to the farm, remodeling the house and adding three new buildings. Donald enjoyed deer hunting and fishing, as well as traveling, especially to the Yellowstone/Teton area. Donald was an expert at sharpening knives. He had a good sense of humor and was a good story teller. Donald was a longtime member of the Pollock Masonic Lodge.
Donald is survived by his two sons, Bill Hill of St. Joseph, MO, and Steven Hill of Pollock, MO.
In addition to this wife and parents, Donald was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Connie Bolinger as well as all his brothers and sisters: Glen Hill, David Hill, William Hill, Henry Lee Hill, George Bruce Hill, Anna Parsons, Helen Hill, and Jenny Snyder.
Memorial services for Donald Hill will be held at the Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 8, 2012, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Donald’s body will be cremated at his request and a private family burial will take place at a later date at the Parsons Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Parsons Cemetery and may be entrusted with Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.
