Dofa Herndon
Dofa Beatrice Herndon, 96, of Unionville, MO passed away at the Putnam County Care Center on December 23, 2012.
Dofa Herndon was born on February 21, 1916 in Green Castle, MO, the daughter of Charlie and Olive (Gates) Ledford. On September 11, 1935 Dofa married Dick Herndon in Unionville, MO. They spent 41 years together until Dick’s passing in 1976. Dofa was an educator her entire life. She started out in the rural country schools before teaching at the Putnam County RI. Just before retirement, Dofa taught at the Glenwood Elementary School. After retirement Dofa kept busy working at the Putnam County Library. She served on the Putnam County Senior Center board since 1984 and was a member of the Colfax Rebekah Lodge. Even with the business of Dofa’s life she always had time to be very involved with her dearly loved family’s lives, attending their ballgames and different events. She was an avid stitch quilter, making a special quilt for each family member.
Dofa Herndon is survived by two daughters, Dixie Shipley and friend Cork Galloway of Unionville, MO and Donna Winckler and husband Ron of Davenport, IA. Dofa’s surviving grandchildren are David Shipley, Patty Donahue, Randy Deeds, Lisa Stroup, Suzan Laures, and Ron Winckler. Dofa is also survived by 12 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Dofa was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Ledford; sister, Delpha Clauson, son-in-law, Bob Shipley and special nephew Junior Ledford.
Memorials for Dofa are suggested to the Putnam County Library and may be entrusted to the Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.
