Virgil Powell
Virgil Powell, 82, passed away at the Putnam County Care Center on Tuesday, January 1, 2013.
Virgil T. Powell was born in Putnam County, MO, on November 30, 1930, the son of Leslie and Grace (Shultz) Powell, who preceded him in death. Virgil graduated from Unionville High School in 1949. He worked at a couple of jobs before he married Louella Brown on August 1, 1950. They later divorced, but four children were born to this union. Virgil married Jolene (Bowen) Ryals on July 7, 1979, and she survives at home.
Virgil began working with Hy-Vee Food Stores in Centerville, IA, in 1952, but then soon moved to the Hy-Vee in Unionville, MO. He worked a total of 37 ½ years with Hy-Vee, retiring in 1990. Virgil also liked life on the farm, raising sheep and goats, and he will be well remembered as a fox and coyote hunter and for the good dogs he raised. He was a longtime member of the Putnam County football chain gang. Virgil owned and operated a gun shop on the side as well as selling Knapp shoes at one time. He was a member of the Unionville Christian Church and a former JayCee.
In addition to his wife, Virgil is survived by his children: Sharon (Mike) Probasco, Ronald (Kay) Powell, Leisa (Robert, Jr.) Ray, son-in-law Jack (Monica) Carter, John (Billie) Ryals, Jim (Nancy) Ryals, and Dirk (Karen) Ryals. Surviving grandchildren are Stacey (Andrew) Patterson, Angie (Richard) Higdon, Bryan (Melissa) Powell, Shon Probasco, Kyle (Michelle) Powell, Aaron Carter, Sarah (Barry)Robb, Megan (Brandon) Summers, Kayla (Dustin) Blaser, Kelsey Ray, and Kolby Ray, Brandi (Aaron) Fowler, Dason Ryals, John T. Ryals (Toni), Amy (Noel) Herrington, Brooke Ryals (Jack), Jeffery T. Ryals, and Jessica L. Ryals,. Twenty-three great grandchildren survive as well as one great-great grandchild. Virgil is also survived by two brothers, Jesse (Roberta) Powell and Robert (Jean) Powell and three sisters, Rowena Haas, Geneva Robinson, and Mary Roof.
Virgil was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley (Powell) Carter, and a grandson, Ruston Carter.
Funeral services for Virgil Powell will be at 10:30 am at Playle & Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, on Saturday, January 5, 2013. There will be no visitation. Interment will be at the Unionville Cemetery followed by lunch and visits with the family at the First Christian Church in Unionville.
