Vivian June Coleman, 79, went to be with her Lord Saturday, April 27,
2013 at the Twin Pines Adult Care Center in Kirksville, MO. She was born June
6, 1933 in St. Louis, MO. the daughter of Henry Lee Coleman and Ella (Lloyd)
Coleman who preceded her in death.
She is survived by one sister, Dena Sullivan of O’Fallon, MO. Also
surviving are nieces and nephews: Joseph LaMantia, St. Louis; Nancy
(LaMantia) Ball, St. Louis; James LaMantia, St. Louis; Debbie (Odam) Case,
Albuquerque NM; William Odam, O’Fallon; Linda (Traska) DeGeare
Wentzville; Connie (Traska) Arnold, Hillsboro and Donna Coleman, St. Louis.
Also many great-nieces and nephews and long time friend, Tony Swain of Kirksville.
Preceding her in death were her parents, three brothers: Bernie Coleman,
Donald Coleman and Woodrow Wilson “Boots” Coleman. Three sisters: Lucille
(Coleman) LaMantia, Thelma (Coleman) Traska and Edna Coleman.
Vivian graduated from Beaumont High School in St. Louis. She attended
Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and received a diploma in Religious Education
in 1954. She then attended Harris Teachers College in St. Louis 1955-1956,
transferring to Kirksville State Teachers College (Now Truman University) in
1957. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from KSTC in 1959 and a
Masters Degree in Counseling in 1961.
Vivian worked for the American Bar Association in Chicago as
Subscription Secretary for 1 1/2 years 1953-1954. She worked with Home Missions
Oak Hills Fellowship in Minnesota in 1954 and 1955. While in school at
KSTC she served as Secretary to the Dean of Women at KSTC for one year
('57-'58). In 1958 she became Minister of Youth at First Baptist Church
Kirksville where she served until 1986 and then became the Minister of
Education and Students until her retirement in 1998.
In 1998 she received the Distinguished Religious Educator Award from the
Missouri Baptist Religious Educators Association.
From 2004 until 2012 she served as secretary to Express Publishing
Rentals in Kirksville.
She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Kirksville following
her retirement and served as Church Librarian as well as working with Baptist
Women, singing in the Senior Songsters, and helping with the College Meals
Ministry of the church.
Her work with children, youth, students and adults was characterized by
true love for them, for her Church and her Lord. She believed in giving her
very best in all she did and encouraging others to serve the Lord in the same
way.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening April 30 at the
Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Chapel in Kirksville. Funeral Service 2
p.m. Wednesday May 1 at First Baptist Church in Kirkville. Music will be
provided by Lisa and Marty Archer and Diantha Cable, organist. Burial in Park
View Memorial Gardens, Kirksville.
Casket Bearers will be Deacons of First Baptist Church.
