Eunice Streeter died June 28, 2013 in Twin
Pines Adult Care Center. Previously a resident of St. Andrews Senior Living
community, she had been a Kirksville resident since 1997. Born in Rising City,
NE, on January 23, 1918, Eunice Elaine Suddarth was the daughter of the late Clyde
R. Suddarth and Josephine Jane Barker Suddarth.
After the death of her mother, Eunice
attended elementary and secondary school in Missouri; spent summers in Nebraska
with her father and stepmother Thelma Sneddeker Suddarth. She graduated from
Rockport High school and was chosen Miss Rockport in 1936; she briefly attended
college at the Kansas City Art Institute.
On February 2, 1939, Eunice was joined in
marriage to Lieber W. Streeter. During the early years of their marriage, Eunice
and Lieber lived in San Antonio and Abilene, TX, Hobbs, NM, and Claremore, OK
before moving to Bartlesville, OK where they both worked at Phillips Petroleum
Company. With a new baby, the couple moved to Reno, NV, and then Kansas City,
MO, before settling in Oklahoma City where they lived from 1949 until
1976. When grandchildren beckoned, they
moved to Stigler, OK; and then to Kirksville, MO in 1997 to enjoy retirement
and great-grandchildren.
During her working years, Mrs. Streeter was
employed as an Avon then Welcome Wagon representative, ladies fashion sales
clerk then department head, and personnel manager at Montgomery Ward. In the
mid 1960s she began teaching retail sales in a school for the unemployed and
underemployed in Oklahoma City. Following Mr. Streeter’s retirement and their
move to Stigler, Oklahoma, she worked as office manager in a medical
clinic.
Always a devoted mother, grandmother, and
great grandmother, she spent many hours caring for and nurturing her family. Active
in the Methodist church wherever she lived, she taught and/or organized Sunday
school, vacation bible school, bible study, and women’s group events and
programs, held memberships on numerous committees and boards, frequently
serving in leadership positions. In later years, she faithfully visited and
provided transportation for less mobile friends.
An avid gardener and reader, she was also an
energetic member of her local and state political party organizations and the Family
and Community Education (FCE) organization. Always one who appreciated good jokes,
she collected and practiced telling them well. She had a happy greeting for
everyone and when asked how she was, her response was most frequently, “Great!”
Preceded
in death by her husband, she is survived by: Daughter and son-in-law, Janet Head
and Michael French; granddaughter and grandson in law Rebecca and Drew Zimmer;
great granddaughters Annabel, Audrey,
and Aliza of Kirksville; and grandson and granddaughter-in-law Daniel and Kate
Head of Kansas City.
