Hershel Newcomer, 84 of LaPlata, MO passed away Friday, August 30, 2013 at the Samaritan Hospital in Macon, MO.

The son of David E. & Alta F. (Glaspie) Newcomer, he was born on April 9, 1929 in Adair County, MO. In 1959 he was united in marriage to Alberta McCabe in LaPlata, MO. To this union a son was born, Lester.

Hershel is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three step children, Russell Fuller, Mike Taylor and Vicki Stretch; brothers, Edgar and Leon Newcomer; sisters, Mildred Newcomer and Thelma West; one grandson, Curtis Fuller and one granddaughter, Heather Feske.

Hershel is survived by his son, Lester Newcomer and Linda Montgomery of LaPlata, MO; step son, John Fuller and wife Rea of Altoona, IA; eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Hershel was reared in Adair County until 7th grade and moved to Macon County. He finished school in Atlanta, graduating from Atlanta High School with the class of 1947. He drove a milk route before entering the Army in 1951 serving in Germany. He was discharged in 1953. After returning from the Army he returned to Atlanta area. He worked for Shouses & Stampers (now ConArga) until he retiring in 1986. Hershel was a member of Atlanta Methodist Church.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Kirksville, MO with Reverend Karen Coy officiating. Musical selections are “Amazing Grace” and The Old Rugged Cross”. Entombment will be at the Maple Hills Chapel Mausoleum in Kirksville with Military Rites.

Pallbearers are Jason Almy, Lee Newcomer, Cody Jarvis, Phillip Feske, Eddie Fuller and Andrew Closser. Honorary bearers are Audra Newcomer, Tony Fuller, Richard Berry, Wayland Noyes and Arthur Newcomer.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, 2 100 E. Shepherd Ave., Kirksville, MO 63501 660-665-2233
