Lavern Mathes 86, passed away unexpected late Saturday (September 7, 2013) in the Schuyler County Nursing Home in Queen City.

The son of Delbert and Cleta (Partin) Mathes, he was born on February 9, 1927, in the Graysville community. On November 24, 1945, in Lancaster, MO he was married to Lavee Rowland who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents, several step-­brothers, one step-sister, and his step- father, Everett Hays.

Lavern is survived by his brother, Guy Weatherly of Lone Pine, CA, brothers-in-law, Bill Rowland and wife Betty of Queen City and Jerry Rowland and wife Jill of Queen City; a sister-in-law, Loretta Cherry of Las Vegas, NV, several nieces and nephews, and special companion Shirley Small.

He grew up in the Graysville area and attended the Graysville School. Lavern spent his early years owning and working in coal mines in Putnam County with his step-father, Everett Hayes. In January 1952 he was inducted into the United States Army and served until December 1953 when he was Honorably Discharged. After his discharge he began farming operations in Schuyler and Putnam Counties. He was also in the trucking business for many years. After retiring he was involved in several business operations with his brother Guy, until his death.

He liked to drive around the country side looking at the land. He was a caring person that helped many people in many ways. He was and honorable man, trusting, and sealed most agreements with just a handshake.

He will be missed by many..

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday (September 12, 2013) at the Dooley Funeral Home with Pastor Charles Jackson officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Cemetery west of Worthington with Military Rites by Schuyler County American Legion Post 784 to follow.

Pallbearers will be Rick Rowland, Tony Rowland, Shane Rowland, Billy Rowland, Tyrone Hays, and Roger Gillum.

Visitation will be held after 1:00 p.m. Wednesday (September 11, 2013) with family greeting friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Dooley Funeral Home, Queen City, MO 63561 660-766-2241
