Evelyn and her brothers lived and were raised by their maternal grandmother due to the early death of their own mother when Evelyn was just 6 years old. She attended Charleston high school, graduating in 1942, and completed one year of college at Eastern Illinois State Teachers College in Charleston.
After her husband was drafted into the U.S. Navy in June of 1943, she worked at Alcoa Aluminum, in Lafayette, Indiana, making parts for the war effort until the war ended. After Bill’s release from the Navy, they resided on a farm in Illinois where he farmed and she was a house wife. In 1959 they bought a farm and moved to Missouri. In 1987, they began spending 6 months of the year in Avon Park, FL.
Evelyn was a member of Whetstone Baptist Church in Illinois and was baptized in a creek near their farm in 1957. Upon moving to Missouri, she attended the First Baptist Church of Queen City, and became a member in 1961 by letter, and served as Director of Nursery, and taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She was a 4-H leader and member of the Queen City Lion’s Club.
Along with her duties as a farm wife, mother and grandmother, she loved to cook, sew, garden, play games, and enjoyed visiting with neighbors and friends. Her kids especially loved the way she would sing around the house and tap dance. Evelyn was a faithful follower of The Lord Jesus Christ, and her heartfelt desire was to pass her faith on to her children and grandchildren.
