Edward Thomas Loughead, 88, of Unionville, MO passed away peacefully at his home on February 20, 2014.


Ed was born on April 3, 1925 in Trenton, MO, the son of Thomas Hampton and Amyl (Cook) Loughead. After graduating from Galt High School in 1943, Ed served in the Army Air Force from 1941-1947.

On August 18, 1946 Ed married Idella “Dell” Connell and three boys were born to this union. After earning a degree from the University of Missouri, Ed began working for Kraft Foods engaging in business management in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana. In 1968 Ed and Dell made their home in Putnam County. Here they took over the Ben Franklin store on the Unionville square for the next 20 years from Ed’s aunt and uncle, Ed and Marie Schick. Ed was a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan, an avid reader, and enjoyed the outdoors where he spent time hunting and fishing. Ed had his favorite secret coves at Lake Thunderhead and also enjoyed fishing in Florida. On the weekends he moonlighted as a trombone player in a band earning the nickname “Little Eddie.” On special occasions Little Eddie would deliver surprise serenades. A highlight in Ed’s life was the opportunity he had to pitch against Satchel Page.

Ed Loughead is survived by sons; Martin “Marty” Edward Loughead and wife Perri of Osage Beach, MO, Wesley Jay Loughead, and Thomas Kenton “Bernie” Loughead and wife Carol all of Unionville, MO. Surviving grandchildren are Tanya Loughead of Buffalo, NY, Brett Loughead of Jefferson City, MO, Rikki Engle and husband Brian of Maryville, MO, Lindsay Hayward and husband Ryan of Little Rock, AR, Jackie Roth and husband Curt of Kansas City, MO, and Kaitlyn Dunkin and husband Reggie of Maryville, MO. Surviving great grandchildren are Jordan Engle, Hunter Hayward, and Logan Hayward. Ed was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Memorials for Ed Loughead are suggested to the Putnam County Library or the Wounded Warriors and may be entrusted to the Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.


According to Ed’s request, he was cremated and a private family burial will be held at a later date.
