Rex Sloop, 102 passed away Friday morning, June 6, 2014, at his home in Queen City.

The son of J.W. and Minnie (North) Sloop, he was born in Queen City on January 21, 1912. In March of 1912 the family moved one mile east of Queen City to their farm home.

Rex attended elementary school at Chilly Grove and graduated from Queen City High School with the class of 1929. The following year he taught at Chilly Grove and then went to Kansas City to attend school returning each summer for two years. During one of his train rides home he met a gentleman who he had a great visit with, not knowing that he was visiting with J.C. Penny until after Mr. Penny got off the train. Due to his father’s health he returned to farming in 1933, renting acreage too and trucking.

On October 1, 1938, he was married to Sybal Colleen Schmid in Elmer, Missouri by Reverend Perley M. Lind, and to this marriage two children were born, a son Bill and a daughter Sherry. His parents retired from farming and moved into Queen City and Rex and his bride lived at the farm home operating a Grade A Dairy for 20 years. In 1958, Rex was appointed postmaster of Queen City, serving two years before transferring to rural mail carrier for rural route one, retiring in 1988, with thirty years of service. In October 2004, they sold the farm and he and his family moved into Queen City.

Rex is survived by his wife of 75 years, Colleen; his son, Bill and Tiffany Sloop; his daughter, Sherry Sloop; his grandchildren, Meghan (Sloop) Hoover and husband Shawn of Kirksville, Jeffrey Martin and wife Ashlee of Fort Leonard Wood, Zachery Stephens, and Paige Cornelison of Kirksville; great grandchildren, Austin Martin, Keegan Hoover, and Kinslea Hoover, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sister Carolyn Lay and one in infancy, and several Aunts and Uncles.

Rex became a member of the Queen City Christian Church on October 14, 1999. He worked with the Extension Service and was on the board of the Schuyler County Mutual Insurance Co. where he received a plaque for 27 years of service. He was a member of the Queen City Masonic Lodge #380 AF & AM, receiving his fifty year pin September 6, 1990. He was also a member of the Queen City Lion’s Club.

He liked working with cattle, carrying the mail, and serving his community. He enjoyed his family and home and had a great love for his grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday (June 10, 2014) at 2:00 p.m. at the Dooley Funeral Home with Pastor George Bradburn officiating. Music will be provided by Georgia Ann Robinson and Gwen Laudwig. Burial will be in the Queen City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Martin, Shawn Hoover, Zach Stephens, Richard Wheeler, Rick Fugate, John Applegate, and Jim Berry. Honorary bearers will be Randy Johns, Don Wheeler, Richard Western, Willard Alexander, Bryan Jones, Perley Smith, Marvin Miller, Paul Anderson, Jerry Conner, Leon Schmitter, Ward Jones, Donnie Crabtree, John March, and Charles Rigdon.

Visitation will be held after 1:00 p.m. Monday (June 9, 2014) with family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Masonic service at 7:00 p.m. at the
