Dale Robert Martin

Dale Robert Martin, 79, of Kirksville passed away in his home during the early morning hours of June 30, 2014, after a long battle with cancer. He fought this battle hard as so many others do.

The son of Joseph and Alma Martin, he was born in St. Louis on January 19, 1935. On June 1, 1968 he married Mary Maxine Adam in Eldon, Iowa.

Dale attended Mason School and graduated from Southwest High School in St. Louis, Missouri. He received a BS and MA degree from the University of Missouri and attended graduate study at the University of Iowa. He taught geography for thirty-two years at Truman State University.

Dale was an avid reader and had a great knowledge of the world. He shared that knowledge with his family, friends, and students. It has been said: “Touch a life – teach.” Dale did just that all his life.

After retiring from teaching at Truman State he and his wife traveled to many places around the world.

Dale was a strong link in the chain between the generations of his parents and his children. He was a good husband, father, grandfather, and teacher.

Dale is survived by his wife, Mary Maxine; son, Daniel; two daughters, Laura Capps and Christy Frushour; mother-in-law, Mary Catherine Adam; two sons-in-law, Aaron and Ted; and five grandchildren, Jacob, Luke, Ira, Mary and Abigail.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Nancy Jean Martin.

He was a member of the Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, National Geographic Society, Music Box Society International, and Adair Historical Society.
