Rema Lorena Dixon, 104 and 7 months, of Unionville, MO, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, July 8, 2014, at the Putnam County Care Center in Unionville, MO, where she had been a resident for seven months.
Rema was born in Unionville, MO, on January 3, 1910, the daughter of Henry C. and Nancy Ellen (Jones) Meyer. She married George Everett Dixon on May 4, 1929 and he preceded her in death on June 24, 1988.
Rema graduated from Unionville High School in 1928 and received a Teacher’s Certificate. She worked at the Telephone Office in Unionville before her marriage. Rema and George worked in Newton, IA, a few months, then came back to Putnam County and began farming. They both went to the field and worked together, raising quality livestock. Rema had learned the farm life while helping her father in the fields as a young girl. Rema was a dedicated farmer’s wife; she had strong hands for heavy work, but could stitch the most delicate fancy work and make beautiful quilts. They sold the farm on Route U, northwest of Unionville in 1976 and moved to town.
After becoming a widow she obtained her driver’s license at age 78. She was still scooping snow from her sidewalks at age 103. She maintained her home, cooked, and conducted business transactions until past the age of 103. She enjoyed reading her Bible and local papers. Rema had beautiful hand writing and she loved to work and keep her mind active.
Rema was baptized into Christ at the age of 96. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Unionville, MO.
Rema was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Dale and Paul Meyer, and four sisters, Leta Worley, Violet Pearson, Isabell Scalf, and Margaret McHenry-Davis.
Rema is survived by several nieces and nephews from out of the area, and Johnny and Norma Dixon of Unionville, MO.
Funeral services for Rema Dixon will be at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, at 2:00 pm on Friday, July 11, 2014 with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Unionville Cemetery.
