Carl R. Baldwin, age 78, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2014, at Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri, after the onset of Acute Leukemia.

Carl was born February 16, 1936 in Columbia, Missouri, the son of Frank H. and Helen H. Baldwin. He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Ausmus) Baldwin and daughter, Jill A. (Baldwin) Walker and husband, John, of Weldon Spring, Missouri. Carl is also survived by brother, Charles (wife Cathy) Baldwin of Kirksville; sisters, Anne (Baldwin) Jerome (husband Keith) of Foristell, Missouri and Nancy (Baldwin) Maack (husband Bill) full-time RVers, and brother-in-law, Larry Ausmus of Shell Knob, Missouri. Also surviving are several nephews, nieces, and great nephews and nieces.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, one nephew, one great nephew and two great nieces.

Carl was a graduate of Kirksville High School, class of 1954, and received a B.S. degree at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman State University) in Business Administration with a Minor in Industrial Arts in 1959. Carl served nine years in the Army Reserve. He started working at a young age in the family business, Baldwin’s Biz Mart, and became President of the company upon the retirement of his father. Carl also served on the Board of the Commerce Bank for several years. As an active member of the Kirksville Jaycees, Carl served as Missouri State Jaycee President in 1966-67. Carl was a committed member of the Kirksville Noon Rotary Club for the last 44 years. He served as Club President in 1982-83, as an Assistant Governor to Rotary District 6040 (2010-2013) and was Treasurer of the Kirksville Rotary Charitable Fund at the time of his death. Carl received the Ray Klinginsmith Distinguished Service Award 2010 and most recently received the Kirksville Rotary Club’s 4-Way Test Award, along with his brother, Charles. Carl was a member of the First United Methodist Church, serving as a Trustee for several years. He was a member of the Adair Lodge #366 A.F. & A.M. of the Masonic Order and served many years as the Secretary/Treasurer for the Yorkrite Bodies.

Carl was extremely involved in community activities and was always ready and willing to promote Kirksville and the two Universities. He retired in 2006, after 15 years as the Campus Mail Director at Truman State University. Since his retirement, Carl and Shirley have enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, August 16, 2014 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home with a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., August 17, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Richard Northcutt officiating. A graveside service and burial will take place at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, Missouri on Monday, August 18, 2014 at 11:00am.
