He graduated from Unionville High School in 1958 and attended Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman University) for a time. Mike then moved to Rockford, IL, where he worked as a parts manager for a manufacturing company. He later moved to Sublette and worked at Donnellson’s in Kirksville, MO for 11 years. Mike was a part-time hunter and fisherman. He liked to drive the country roads and visit the farm. If Mike had it his way, he would have hunted mushrooms from the south to the north until the season was over.
