Carroll Hackney
Melvan Carroll Hackney, 90, of Unionville, MO passed away at the Putnam County Memorial Hospital on Sunday, February 8, 2015.
Carroll Hackney was born in Lemons, MO on February 7, 1925 the son of Leo and Bertha (Schnelle) Hackney. He attended the Triumph rural school and Lemons High School. On September 19, 1944 he was inducted into the Army Air Force. After completing basic training stateside he was transferred to Schlangenbad, Germany where he supervised German prisoners of war at a work camp. He was honorably discharged from the service on July 24, 1946 with the rank of Tech Corporal.
He returned to Lemons where he started living the simple life of a farmer. He tended the ground and paid special attention to his livestock, horses, and faithful dogs.
On November 6, 1969 Carroll married Margaret Fay Lea in Newtown, MO and two children were born to this union. Carroll loved to tease people which included his family. In later years you could find him at the local coffee shops tormenting his friends. Carroll was a member of the American Legion, Bee Keepers Association, Putnam County Coyote Hunters Association, and both a member and president for a time of the Lemons Cemetery Board. He loved running his dogs on a good hunt, but mostly enjoyed the children in his life that were special to him.
Carroll is survived by his wife Margaret of the home, a son, Michael Hackney and wife Gwyneth of Boise, ID, and a daughter Michelle Hellums and husband Mark of Cypress, TX. Carroll is also survived by four grandsons, Ethan Hackney, Nathaniel Hackney, Nolan Hackney, Eli Hackney, and step granddaughter, Taylor Hellums. Also surviving are sister, Helen Deeds, sister-in-law, Wanda Lowry, and many nephews, nieces and friends.
In addition to his parents Carroll was preceded in death by brothers Austin Hackney, Verlan Hackney, and Leo Junior Hackney; sisters Wilma Noland, Wilda Hackney, Rayma Hackney, Mary Holliday, and an infant sister Georgie Hackney along with brothers-in-laws Carroll Lea and Dean Lea.
Funeral services for Carroll Hackney were held at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, on Friday, February 13, 2015, with visitation the preceding evening. Tom Rowland conducted the service with recorded musical selections “Amazing Grace,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” and “Blessed Assurance.”
Casket bearers were Carroll Noland, Danny Noland,
Larry Hackney, Donald Lea, Russell Lea, and Jimmy Durbin. Honorary casket bearers were Ronny Roof, Martin Hackney, Melvan Holliday, Clark Hackney, Elvan Holliday, Joe Lowry, Kevan Holliday, Wayne Lowry, Jim Grimes, Elwood Lowry, Don and Donald Noland. Interment was at the Lemons Cemetery.
Memorials for Carroll are suggested to the Lemons Cemetery or the Lemons Community Building and may be entrusted to the Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.
