A memorial service for Maxine “Granny” Knowlton will be held at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, at 7:00 PM on Friday, March 27, 2015. A visitation will be held from 6:30 until the time of the service. Maxine passed away in Orlando, FL, on July 29, 2014. Her remains were cremated.

Clara Maxine Cassell was born in Keokuk, IA, on May 22, 1925, the daughter of Earl and Dolly (Baker) Cassell, who preceded her in death. She was reared in Keokuk and attended High School there. She lived her adult life in Belleville, MI, and Orlando, FL, among other places. She lived in Unionville, MO, from 1984 until 2009 when she moved to Orlando. Maxine liked to play bingo and to do crafts, especially needlepoint. She would often set up crafts booths at local shows. She loved to watch the Game Show Network. Granny had a feisty and spirited personality and she liked to be on the go. It was said of her that “if the wheels were turning, Granny was going.”

Maxine is survived a daughter, Patience Stottlemyre and her husband Bronson of Unionville, MO, and a son, Doug Akers and his wife Rhonda of Bridgeport, MI. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Doug (Casey) Leach, Eddie (Jenna) Leach, and Ben Akers. Her surviving great grandchildren are Vanessa and Nathan Leach and Zayda and Addalyn Leach. A sister, Betty Dodd of West Virginia also survives.

An interment will take place in Keokuk at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Foundation and may be entrusted with Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.
