Richard Lewis
Richard Lewis, 87, formerly of Lucerne, MO, passed away at the Corydon Nursing and Rehab Center in Corydon, IA, on Monday, March 30, 2015. He had been a resident there for two years.
Richard Dean Lewis was born in Milan, MO, on November 18, 1927, the son of Edward and Beulah (Cassity) Lewis who preceded him in death. After spending his childhood years in Milan, the state of Iowa, and Browning, MO, the family settled in the Newtown, MO, area where Richard attended Newtown-Harris High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945 and served during World War II until he was honorably discharged in 1948. Richard returned to Newtown after the service where he farmed for many years. He worked at the foundry in Centerville, IA for approximately 8-10 years before it closed and then worked as a handy-man. Richard was a jack-of-all trades who was good with his hands. He lived in Cincinnati, IA for 15 years before moving to Corydon.
Richard liked to do wood working, making craft and furniture items for his family and friends. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and would often come to visit with his brother James’ family. He liked to eat popcorn and watch western movies. Richard was a member of American Legion Post #249 in Lucerne, MO.
Richard is survived by sisters-in-law Elizabeth Lewis of Newtown, MO, and Betty Lewis of Cedar Rapids, IA, and by brother-in-law Eugene Johnson of Lucerne, MO. Several nieces and nephews survive as well.
Richard was preceded in death by four brothers: Edward, Frank, James, and William Lewis, and by a sister, Mary Johnson.
Richard’s wishes were to be cremated. A private family interment will take place at a later date at the Lucerne, MO cemetery.
