Laveta Garland

Laveta Garland, 78, of Powersville, MO, passed away on Friday, April 17, 2015, at the home of her son in Sewal, IA, after a battle with cancer.

Laveta Dorine was born in Corydon, IA on December 25, 1936, the daughter of Lloyd D. and Wilma Ava (Stoker) Todd, who preceded her in death. She was reared in Putnam County, MO and graduated from Powersville High School in 1955. She attended college briefly in Kansas City and was married to Earl Dean Garland on June 1, 1957 and he preceded her in death on December 24, 1995.

Laveta and Earl lived in the Quad Cities area until moving to Lucerne, MO, in 1967. They then moved to the farm near Powersville in 1972. Laveta worked at Rudds Market in Milan, IL, and later worked at Shivers Manufacturing in Corydon. Laveta drove a school bus for a few years as well as working at Stark Locker in Powersville and Neeley’s Manufacturing.

Laveta was a person of varied interests who enjoying crochet and cross stitch. She also made quilts for all the grandkids. She did leather work, making purses, wallets, and belts. Laveta was always busy whether it was with horses, riding a 4-wheeler, hunting or just being outdoors. She belonged to extension clubs when she was younger and loved to attend the Crawford Mule Shows in Humeston, IA.

Laveta is survived by a daughter, Joyce King of Centerville, IA, and three sons, Lucas (Melinda) Garland of Unionville, MO; William (Melody Johnson) Garland of Corydon, IA; and Gery (Brenda) Garland of Purdin, MO. Twelve grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren also survive as well as two brothers, James Todd of Prophetstown, IL, and Ed (Karen) Todd of Marietta, GA. Two nieces and two nephews survive as well.

Graveside services for Laveta Garland will be at the Powersville Cemetery in Powersville, MO, at 10:30 am on Wednesday, April 22, 2015. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 21, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Interment will be at the Powersville Cemetery.
