Vergle Eugene (Gene) Corbett passed away Monday morning at approximately 3 am at the age of 93.

Gene was born February 20, 1922 in Kirksville, Mo to Lula May Waddill and Glecia Corbett.

After graduating from high school in Onarga, IL. he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1939. His career in the Navy spanned for 30 years and included service during World War II in the pacific and aboard the USS Glacier in Antarctic among other various assignments and deployments in the states and overseas. Gene retired from the Navy in 1970 as a Lieutenant Commander, he returned to the small family farm near Sublette to raise cattle. He returned to work after a few years as a Food Service Manager working in Kirksville, St. Louis and Charleston, SC. He later became the Nutrition Director and the Executive Director for the Northeast Missouri Area Agency on Aging. Gene was a Freemason for sixty years and a member of the Adair Lodge A.F & A.M. #366. He married Helen Sarah Gentry on November 19, 1942 in Reno NV. She preceded him in death January 15, 1991. Later he married Helen Irene (Susie) Van Hoose October, 4, 1993. She preceded him in death December 31, 2010.

He is survived by his four sons and their spouses, Stephen (Linda) of St. Mary GA. Curtis (Jan) of Kirksville, Mo, Clifford (Amber) of Kirksville, Mo, James (Sherri) of Columbia, Mo. Also surviving sister-in-law Nancy Summers of Green Top, Mo., grandchildren Stephen Jr., David (Steve and Linda). Michael, Mark and John (Curtis and Jan.) Dawn and Mathew (Clifford and Amber), Erin and Kristopher (James and Sherri) in addition to numerous great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death are his two brothers, Robert Summers and Charles Summers. Gene’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren wish to thank the wonderful staff of The Arbors at Highland Crest for his care.

A Funeral service will be held on Thursday July 9, 2015 at 3:00pm at the Davis-Playle-Hudson Rimer- Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Fredricks officiating. Military Rights will be held following the service

Family will receive friends from 2:00pm until time of service, a Masonic service will be held by Adair Lodge #366 A.F & A.M. just prior to the funeral service
A private interment will be held at the Park View Memorial Gardens
