Mauretta Claire West

Mauretta Claire West age 88 of Queen City passed away July 17, 2015 at her home with her daughter in Shawnee Mission, Kansas.

The daughter of John William and Iva Blanche (Shupp) Cornell, she was born on August 11, 1926 in Kirksville, Missouri. On May 20, 1949 in Kirksville she was married to Jack Leon Dooley and to this marriage five children were born. On July 22, 1977 at the home of Rev. Ralph M.G. Smith in Kirksville she was united in marriage to Edward Thomas West, who preceded her in death on February 4, 2008.

She is survived by Mrs. Jacquelyn Crump and husband Jeff of Shawnee Mission, KS, twin sons, Jerry Dooley of Queen City and Terry Dooley and wife Lisa of Arlington, TX, and John L. Dooley and wife Lisa of Plainfield, IL; one stepdaughter, Sue Major and husband Phil of Kansas City, MO; six grandchildren, two step grandchildren, seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Dooley Conner on November 10, 2011; her father on February 9, 1963; her Mother on November 26, 1965; a half sister, Flossie Cornell on March 25, 1899 and a cousin, Ernest Burl Bauer, who was raised in the Cornell home on October 13, 1989.

Mauretta moved with her family to the Clay neighborhood at the age of seven. She attended Hazel Green rural school and the Brashear High School, graduating with the Class of 1943. Following graduation she worked in Kirksville at Magruder Grocery, during the summers while attending the Kirksville State Teachers College, now known as "Truman University" and taught in the rural schools in Adair County and in the public school system in Downing and Knox City. She was a member of the Queen City Baptist Church. A member of the Auxiliary of The Gideons International. A member and Past Noble Grand of the Rebkah Lodge. A Life member of the Auxiliary of the Disabled American Veterans #48. A member of NARFF Chapter #787 of Kirksville. She was also a licensed Missouri Funeral Director. In January of 1950 she moved to Queen City where she and her husband, along with Francis "Buck" and Mildred White opened the Dooley Funeral Home. Mauretta loved going to antique shops and garage sales. As one of her many hobbies she enjoyed bird watching and planting cactus's. She will be dearly missed and loved.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday (July 20, 2015) at the Dooley Funeral Home with Pastor Sonny Smyser officiating. Burial will be in the Queen City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Donnie Pierce, Joe Peirce, Jeff Pierce, Wendall Gehreke, Jeff Crump and Cody Crump.
