Verdun J. Cupp died peacefully surrounded by family and friends Sunday, February 8, 2009 at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, MO after a brief illness.

Verdun was born January 14, 1912 near Atlanta, MO the third child to Edith and Howard Doggett. She attended school in Atlanta and graduated from the Atlanta High School as the Valedictorian of the class of 1929. She spent her summers studying at the Kirksville State Teachers College and taught grades 1 through 8 in a one room country school near Atlanta commuting by horseback. She taught three years then married Dallas Cupp on April 28, 1932. They lived on four different farms during the next thirteen years and during this time had three children, Bill, Carole and Jerry. The family moved to Kirksville in 1945 and Verdun completed her cosmetology training in 1950. She worked as a beautician in some capacity over the next thirty five years. In 1974 she was one of the founding members of the Kirksville Chapter of the Sweet Adeline’s barbershop chorus. Her love of singing resulted in composing and arranging many of the selections performed by the chorus and the Harmony Four quartet. She had a poetic talent and wrote numerous poems over the last thirty years or more about family, her faith and life. Her book of short stories and poems, "Labor of Love”, was published in1992.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, her sister and brother, her husband, a granddaughter, Karla, in 1999 and son Bill in 2000.

She is survived by her daughter, Carole Broadwater and husband Art of Manchester, MO, her son, Gerald V “Jerry" Cupp and wife Naomi of Columbia, MO, twelve grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday (Feb. 11, 2009) at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Maple Hills Cemetery in Kirksville, MO.

Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 10, 2009) at
