Joe McDonald, 84, of Unionville, MO, passed away in his home early Sunday morning, September 6, 2015. He had suffered a serious heart condition for several years.

Joseph Vincent McDonald was born December 19, 1930, in Davis City, IA, in his family’s home. He was the tenth of twelve children, born to Preston and SuEtta McDonald. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, both his parents, and 5 brothers and 5 sisters. He is survived by his five daughters and their families and his youngest brother.

Joe was raised in Davis City where he went to school with and married his childhood sweetheart and love of his life, Ruth Hope Tellier. Joe and Ruth were united in marriage on Apr. 14, 1948, and enjoyed 66 1/2 wonderful years together. Their marriage was blessed with five daughters, Linda Gatlin and husband, Ted, of Unionville, Connie Stottlemyre and husband, Roger, of Lee’s Summit, MO, Donna Brown and husband, Marty, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Denise Wood and husband, Randy, of Kearney, MO, and Melanie and fiancé Sidney Appleton, of Kearney, MO. They were also blessed with fourteen grandchildren, Chad, Todd, Troy, Shane, Monica, Tanya, Trevor, Brock, Blake, Chris, Brandi, Sabrina, Brittany & Preston, and sixteen great-grandchildren, and expecting the 17th great-grandchild in October.

Joe served his country in the United States Navy from January 1948 to February 1950, being discharged as a CR-Seaman.

Joe started his Hy-Vee career in Newton, IA, in 1956. He was promoted to assistant manager and moved his family to Washington, IA in 1957. He remained there until 1963, at which time he was promoted to manager, again moving his family, this time to Unionville. He took an early retirement in 1981.

After his retirement, Joe and Ruth, enjoyed travelling, trailer camping, and visiting their children’s homes. Joe enjoyed reading his Bible daily, golfing, dancing, fishing, hunting, playing games on the computer, and an occasional trip to the casino. He also enjoyed a full moon, thunderstorms and loved bird watching.

Joe and Ruth were both members of the First Christian Church of Unionville.

Funeral services for Joe McDonald will be at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 10, 2015, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment at the Pherigo Cemetery, southeast of Unionville, MO.

Memorials are suggested to Pherigo Cemetery, Unionville, and may be entrusted to the Playle-Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.
