Lulu May Barnett 96 of Kirksville and formerly of Queen City passed away Thursday (Feb. 26, 2009) in Northeast Regional Medical Center.
The daughter of James E. and Melissa Edith (Thomas) Tipton, she was born Feb. 28, 1912 four miles northwest of Queen City. On May 10, 1933 at Macon, MO she was united in marriage to Florin (Johnny) Figge who preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 1972. On June 21, 1986 in Queen City she was married to Herman Barnett and he preceded her in death on Dec. 21, 2003. Also preceding her in death were her parents, two sisters, Edith Crum and Maxine Lewis and a step grandson, Douglas Filkens.
Surviving are one daughter, Joan Moore and husband Jerry of Charlottesville, VA, one son, Richard Figge and wife Elizabeth of Minooka, IL; one step daughter, Jody Filkins and husband Howard of Oklahoma City, OK; four grandchildren, Brenda (Edward) Koonce, Debbie (David) Thacker, Timothy (Viki) Figge and Christopher Figge; three step grandsons, Dale, David and Daniel Filkins and families; eight great grandchildren and one brother, Roy Tipton of Hot Springs Village, AR.
Lulu lived on the farm where she was born until age nine when her mother died and she moved to Queen City. She attended rural school and the Queen City High School graduating with the Class of 1929. After graduation she worked at the local telephone switch board. After finishing a course at Business School she became a stenographer. Following her marriage she became a farm wife and devoted mother to her children. When her children were through school she worked part time at Muffs Cafe and Whites Grocery and in 1962 she became the Schuyler County Librarian a position she held until retiring in 1983.
She was a member of the Queen City Baptist Church, W. M. D., Chapter G P. E. O. and the Lancaster Garden Club.
Funeral service and P.E.O. service will be held at 10:30 Monday (March 2, 2009) in the Dooley Funeral Home with Reverend Larry Groom officiating. Interment will be in the Queen City Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Tim Figge, Chris Figge, Dan Filkins, David Thacker, John Lewis and Robert Lewis.
