Joseph Jackson Muir, 85, of Kirksville passed away Monday, March 2, 2009, at the Northeast Regional Medical Center.
The son of Clate L. and Eunia (Simmons) Muir, Joe was born April 17, 1923 in the Loeffle Community in Adair County. On May 2, 1947 in Olathe, KS he was united in marriage to Evaline Haines who preceded him in death. On February 14, 1996 in Las Vegas, NV he was united in marriage to Irma Walls Beets.
Joe is survived by his wife, Irma; his son, Nick Muir and wife Carol of St. Charles, MO; five grandchildren, Kate Muir of the home, Brett Muir and his wife Gloria of St. Charles, MO, Bryon Muir and his wife Emily of Warrenton, MO, Brandon Muir and his wife Michelle of St. Charles, MO and Bradley Muir and his wife Leslie of Fort Hood, TX; five great-grandchildren and four step-sons, Larry Beets and wife Cindy of Springfield, MO, Ray Beets and wife Michelle of Callendar, IA, Michael Beets and wife Diana of Kirksville and Jaye Beets and wife Billie of Kirksville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evaline on May 29, 1995 and three brothers, Basil, Wilford and Leon Muir.
Joe was reared in the Loeffle Community in Adair County, MO where he attended the rural Willow Branch School. He served in the United States Navy during WW II. Joe finished high school while serving in the U.S. Navy by the American Correspondence Course in Chicago, IL. After his military service he farmed in the Nind Community. In 1954 he purchased a country store in Hurdland, MO which he operated until 1972. Joe served as the Assessor of Knox County, MO from 1974 to 1989, moving to Kirksville in 1990.
Joe was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Kirksville, Colony Lodge #168 A.F&A.M., Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1751, V.F.W. Post #2508, MacDougall-Lowe Post #20, American Legion, Molia Temple, El Kadir Shrine Club, Kirksville Country Club and the NEMO Senior Golfers.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 5, 2009, at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home with Reverend Beryl Cragg officiating. Instrumental music will be provided by Frankie Williams. Burial will be in the Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville.
Pallbearers will be Brett Muir, Bryon Muir, Brandon Muir, Bradley Muir, Kelly Beets and John Sutter.
Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Wednesday evening, March 4, 2009, with a Masonic Service at 6:00 p.m. conducted by Colony Lodge #168 A.F.&A.M., at the
