Linda Chornock, 68, of Unionville, MO, passed away at the Putnam County Memorial Hospital on Thursday, January 21, 2016.
Linda Carol McCoy Chornock was born in the Midway area of Putnam County, MO, on August 3, 1947, the daughter of Clarence and Geraldine Wyant McCoy, who preceded her in death. She was reared in an area that was a close knit community where neighbors were more like family than friends. She attended rural Central City School for her first through sixth grade years, then on to Lucerne for her seventh grade. The R-3 schools consolidated in 1961 and she was the first class that graduated from the eighth grade at West Putnam R-3. Linda attended high school in Unionville and graduated in 1965. During her high school years she had to take American History and this sparked an interest in her decision to major in history at Truman State University where she graduated with a B. S. and a Master’s degree.
Linda married Thomas Chornock in 1970 and they are the parents of Stephen (who died in infancy), Ryan and Linda. Linda and Tom had the great pleasure to travel and spent a year in Taiwan where Linda taught English. They eventually settled in Virginia where Tom worked for the CIA in Washington, D. C. Linda was a stay-at-home mom and spent many hours teaching her children. Linda and Tom later divorced.
Linda’s health took an ominous turn and she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. She became unable to care for herself and so she returned to Missouri in 1999 and entered the Putnam County Care Center. She has lived there since that time.
Linda had a vast knowledge of history and historical events. Her past enjoyment was in reading. She and Tom had a home filled with books equal to any library. It is no surprise that her daughter, Laura, majored in Library Science and went on to obtain her Master’s Degree. Linda’s son, Ryan, has a Ph.D. in Astrophysics.
Linda is survived by her daughter, Laura Morales and husband David of Hampton, VA, and her son, Ryan Chornock, of Athens, OH. She is also survived by two sisters, Lola Williams and husband Butch and Nettie Lewis and husband Keith, all of Lucerne, MO.
In addition to a son and her parents, Linda was also preceded in death by a brother, Donald Wyant McCoy.
Graveside services for Linda Chornock will be at the Unionville Cemetery in Unionville, MO, at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 24, 2016. There will be no family visitation, but the public may pay respects from 1:00 – 4:00 PM on Friday or from 10:00 -2:00 PM on Saturday. Interment will be at the Unionville Cemetery.
