Lena Mae Collins

Lena Mae Collins, 92, of Lucerne, MO, passed away at the Loch Haven Nursing Home in Macon, MO, on Tuesday, April 14, 2009. She had been a resident there for about five years.
Lena Mae (Cook) Collins was born August 19, 1916 in rural Putnam County, MO, the daughter of Levi and Grace (Bradshaw) Cook, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Unionville High School in 1934 and on July 4, 1935 she married Orris Collins in Lancaster, MO. He preceded her in death on December 29, 1999.
Lena Mae and Orris lived and farmed their entire life in western Putnam County, near Lucerne, where they raised and sold registered Angus cattle. They moved to the farm that Lena Mae still owns in 1950. Lena Mae was an active partner in the farm, doing the books and keeping track of the registration of the cattle. She was a good business woman. She also raised chickens and a fine garden. She was active in the community as a member of the Opportunity (Extension) Club and the Lucerne Methodist Church.
Lena Mae liked to make quilts and especially enjoyed entertaining and visiting with friends. She was an avid card player and Pitch was her favorite card game. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.
Lena Mae is survived by a daughter, Diana Montgomery and husband Larry of Macon, MO. Two grandchildren also survive: Markeena Farmer and husband Rick of Macon, MO, and Marty Montgomery of Melbourne, FL. Lena Mae’s two great grandchildren are Lynsey Farmer and Aaron Montgomery.
Lena Mae was also preceded in death by a brother, J. W. Cook, and a sister, Helen Miller.
Funeral services for Lena Mae Collins were held on Friday, April 17, 2008, at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Kevin Collins conducted the service with music by Brenda Collins who sang “Gathering Flowers for the Master’s Bouquet” and “The Old Rugged Cross.” Casket bearers were Gary Hoover, Ray Cook, Rick Farmer, Marty Montgomery, Bob Collins, and Aaron Montgomery. Honorary casket bearers were Keith Smith, Danny Valentine, Dave Jones, Jay Ross, and Ryan Engle. Interment was in the Unionville Cemetery.
Memorials for Lena Mae Collins are suggested to the Unionville Cemetery and may be entrusted to Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 s. 27th, Unionville, MO, 63565.
