Virginia Hopkins, 63, of Unionville, MO, passed away at her home on Saturday, April 25th, 2009. She had been ill for the last four months.
Virginia Lee (Rogers) Hopkins was born in Des Moines, IA, on February 13, 1946, the daughter of Leslie and Catherine (Rassel) Rogers, who preceded her in death. On May 10, 1975 she married Randy Hopkins in Des Moines, IA, and he survives at home.
Virginia was a graduate of Des Moines Tech High School and lived and worked in Des Moines after graduation. She was a nurses’ aide at Yonkers Rehab and also worked at Deluxe check printers. She also worked at the Des Moines Register newspaper. Virginia and Randy purchased property at Lake Thunderhead, where they made there home. Virginia worked as a lab tech at Putnam County Memorial Hospital until her retirement.
Virginia was a person of various interests and hobbies. She liked stamp collecting and also collected angels. She had a special butterfly room in her house for that collection and she also “collected” cats, even showing kindness to neighborhood strays. She liked to tend her flower garden and watch old black and white movies. Virginia was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Unionville, MO where she taught parish religious education, was treasurer of the Rosary Altar Society and gave leadership to many church projects.
In addition to her husband, Virginia is survived by three children: Dan Henderson and fiancé Julie Cozad; Robert Henderson; and Christine Stratton, all of Des Moines, IA. Eight grandchildren surviving grandchildren are Derreck Stratton, Amanda Stratton, Ashley Stratton, Robbie Henderson, Brandi Stanley, Jake Darby, Josh Darby, and Todd Allen. Her two great grandchildren are Josh and McKenzie Henderson. Virginia is also survived by two brothers, Stephen Rogers of Carlisle, IA and David Rogers of Des Moines, IA; and two sisters, Gloria Penenger of Des Moines, IA, and Carla Rogers-Daily of Cottage Grove, MN.
A funeral Mass will be held for Virginia at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will be at Playle & Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, on Monday from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Interment was in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Unionville, MO.
Memorials for Virginia Hopkins are suggested to St. Mary’s Catholic Church and may be entrusted to Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th, Unionville, MO, 63565.
