Marvin McDonald passed away at the Putnam County Memorial Hospital on Thursday, April 23, 2009. Marvin was 66 years of age.
Marvin Eugene McDonald was born in Knoxville, IA, on June 10, 1942, the son of Clifford and Louise (Simmons) Simpson who preceded him in death. He was adopted as a youngster by Thomas Lane McDonald and reared in Knoxville. After High School Marvin worked for Iddings Construction in building construction and also owned a small farm. He was in the United States Army in 1967-68, serving in Viet Nam.
On January 31, 1969, Marvin married Judy Womack in Unionville, MO, and she survives at home. Marvin worked at the Hunt/Ryals Ford Motor Company when he moved to Unionville. He also worked for his uncle Jim Simmons at Simmons Garage and then had his own construction business, building houses and other structures. He was a jack-of-all trades and put those skills to use as a maintenance supervisor at Putnam County Memorial Hospital. Marvin retired from this job.
Marvin enjoyed woodcrafts and gardening as well as latch hooking and doing crossword puzzles. He also liked to play cards. Marvin had a special affection for dogs, his four legged friends. He was baptized into the Knoxville United Methodist church.
Marvin is survived by many friends and family members. His “adopted” family was David and Marilyn Wood and their children, KayLea, Nolan, Riley, and Landon. Marvin is also survived by a special nephew, Ryan Womack and his wife Dana and their daughter Haley, and a special niece Sarah Brown and her husband Danny and their children Kaleb and Zander. Other survivors include Aunt Beryl Kinart, whom he considered as a sister, and her husband Roland; Uncle Mike Simpson and his wife Ina; Aunt Mildred Van Eck; brothers-in-law Orval Spence and his wife Ricee, their children Jeff & Nikki Spence and their children Noah & Hayden; and Bill Womack and his companion Kim; aunt Roylynn Brundage; aunt Donna Dixon and her husband Shelby; and uncles Joe Gray and his wife Lucille and Jack Gray and wife Reba.
In addition to his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by his adopted father, T. L. McDonald and his step-father Carroll Hill. His grandparents were Horace and Sadie Simpson, with whom Marvin spent a lot of time, and John and Ellen Simmons.
Services for Marvin McDonald were at Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, on Sunday, April 26, 2009 with a visitation on Saturday, April 25. Pastor Walter Griffen conducted the services with recorded musical selections “The Old Rugged Cross,” “In the Garden,” and “You Raised Me Up.” Casket bearers were Randy Webber, David Wood, Darwin Alexander, Jeff Pauley, Ronnie Ballard, Jeff Harlan, Brandon Ballard, and Mike Curtis. Honorary casket bearers were Orval Spence, Edgar Webber, Shelby Dixon, Nolan Wood, Landon Wood, Riley Wood, Josh Mathes, Bill Pauley, Bill Womack, Ryan Womack, Duane Gill, Boyd Lambert, Roland Kinert, Zachary Webber, and Bill Lutze. Interment was in the Unionville Cemetery.
Memorials for Marvin are suggested to the Broadlawns Baptist Church and may be entrusted with Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 s. 27th, Unionville, MO, 63565.
