Doris Galbreath, 94, formerly of Powersville, MO, passed away the Corydon Nursing and Rehab Center in Corydon, IA, on Wednesday, March 2, 2016. She had lived there for eight months.
Doris Edna Granger was born in Sargent, NE, on December 4, 1921, the daughter of Zera and Nan Edna (Seidel) Granger, who preceded her in death. She was reared in Nebraska and she married Wayne Edward Galbreath in Taylor, NE, on December 31, 1940, and he preceded her in death on March 1, 2004.
Doris and Wayne moved to the Ozarks after Wayne was discharged from the service and they farmed there for a while. Wayne then enrolled in agricultural school in Buckner, MO, and Doris worked at the Lake City Arsenal. She also worked in the apple orchards and on potato farms. Doris and Wayne then bought a farm in Polo, MO, where they lived for 20 years. Doris was a hard working farm wife in those years. They then moved to Independence, MO, and Doris worked at Wild Woody’s Department Store. Doris and Wayne moved to the Lucerne, MO, area in 1973 where they farmed and raised cattle. They later moved to Powersville, MO, where Doris lived for several years before moving to Seymour, IA, and then to Corydon.
Doris loved to be outside working on the farm. She loved to raise chickens and all the other farm animals. She raised a garden and had a special touch with flowers. Doris liked to draw animals and people. She sewed baby quilts for her grandchildren and liked to cook for large family gatherings. Her family especially remembers her fried chicken and pies. Doris liked to hunt deer and fish and loved music, especially playing the harmonica for friends and family. She liked people and had a determined spirit to accomplish anything she put her mind to.
Doris is survived by a daughter, Irene (George) Roberts of Powersville, MO, and a son, Jerry (Joan) Galbreath of Promise City, IA. Her surviving grandchildren are Kenny, John, Jerry, Gerrod, Melissa G., Julie, Melissa J., Daryl, Rhonda, and Eddie. Thirty-one great grandchildren survive as well as 18 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, LaDonna and Garry Kneedler, and by three grandchildren, Tammy and Teresa Roberts and Melissa Galbreath.
Funeral services for Doris Galbreath will be at Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, at 1:30 PM, on Saturday, March 12, 2016. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 1:30 on the same day as the service. Interment will be at the Powersville, MO, Cemetery.
