George Donald Wohlschlaeger, D.O., 80, of Kirksville, MO, and formerly of St. Louis, MO, passed away March 21, 2009 at Moberly Regional Medical Center.
George was born on June 12, 1928 in Affton to George J.C. Wohlschlaeger, Jr. and Elba Amolia (Huettemann) Wohlschlaeger. He married Mary Louise Flood in December 1950, and to this union four children were born.
He is survived by four daughters: Debra Nothdurft, Kirksville MO; Janice Nelson, Seattle WA; Karin Nelson, Crestwood MO; Merri Jean Manetzke, Eureka MO; eight grandchildren: Andrew, Daniel, Laura and Joseph Kling, Evan and Erin Nelson, and Eric and Leah Nelson, two sons-in-law, two sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
His parents, two brothers John and Ray, and a stillborn son preceded him in death.
George served in the U. S. Army in post WWII Japan. He attended Washington University in St. Louis and graduated from Kansas City School of Osteopathic Medicine in 1955. He practiced medicine in the St. Louis area as a board-certified family practitioner, serving many patients without the means to pay. He lived in St. Louis most of his adult life and at Twin Pines Adult Care Center in Kirksville for the past year and a half.
He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, a 32nd Degree Mason, served as Medical Director and acting Administrator of Normandy Osteopathic Hospital, Past President of the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (1984), and served as the first Medical Director of the Missouri Patient Care Peer Review Organization. He was a founding and active member of many boards of directors for St. Louis metropolitan area organizations for mental health, public health, regional health planning, emergency medicine, emergency health and other charitable causes. He went on several medical mission trips to Latin America.
George was a member of St. Louis Central Seventh Day Adventist Church. Hobbies included Bible study, painting, hunting, and lifelong learning; his greatest joy was helping others achieve their goals. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. and a memorial service will be held at 2:30 on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at Des Peres The Lodge (Dogwood Room), 1050 Des Peres Road, St. Louis, 63131. Burial will be at Valhalla Cemetery in St. Louis at a later time. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Missouri Conservation Society or Central Seventh Day Adventist Church.
