Joann Baughman, 87, passed away unexpectedly at the Putnam County Memorial Hospital in Unionville, MO, on Saturday, March 26, 2016.
Sara Joann (Cook) Baughman was born near Omaha, MO, on August 24, 1928, the daughter of Lawrence and Mary (Newland) Cook, who preceded her in death. She grew up around Omaha, attending the Abbott School and graduating from Livonia High school in 1945. She married Richard Baughman at her parent’s home on December 22, 1946. Richard preceded her in death on May 29, 2004.
Joann and Richard lived most of their married life north of Omaha. Joann taught school briefly and also worked at the light bulb factory in Centerville, IA. She attended beauty school in Kirksville in the mid-1960’s and then opened her own shop in her home. Joann served the Omaha community as a beautician for 21 years. She later cooked for her friend Margaret Brown at Charlie Brown’s in Unionville. She and Richard moved to Unionville in their later years and Joann moved to the Putnam County Care Center a few years after Richard passed away.
Joann was an active member of the Omaha Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and played the piano and organ for over 40 years. She liked to travel and enjoyed visitors at her home. She loved to cook for friends and family and to be around people. She enjoyed life-long friendships with people like Maxine Clinkenbeard and Jean Grogan. She especially loved her kids and grandkids.
Joann Baughman is survived by two sons, Denny (Marie) Baughman and Bruce (Ann) Baughman, all of Unionville, MO. Her grandchildren are Brandon Baughman, Nathan Baughman, Nicole Waugh, Brooke Marvin, and Megan Lunsford. Fourteen great grandchildren also survive as well as a brother, Larry (Wanda) Cook of Independence, MO.
In addition to her parents and husband, Joann was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Blankenship.
Funeral services for Joann Baughman will be at the Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home at 10:30 am on Thursday, March 31, 2016, with visitation from 6:00 – 8:00 on Wednesday, March 30. Interment will be at the Mitchell Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Omaha Baptist Church Building Fund and may be entrusted with Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.
