Robert Ovid Davis

Robert Davis, 83, of Unionville, MO, passed away at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, IA, on Saturday, April 30, 2016.

Robert Ovid Davis was born at the family farm in Unionville, MO, on January 27, 1933, the son of Albion Stanley and Josie Mae (Scrivens) Davis, who preceded him in death. Robert graduated 8th grade from the Halley country school and then began working on the family farm with his Dad and Mom. Robert served in the US Army from March 26, 1953, until March 17, 1955.

Robert married Dolores Mae Ross on April 4, 1955, and she survives. They started farming on the old home place and later worked for Fon Owings veterinary service. They moved to Prairie City, IA, in 1965, working for H. S. Oslin Construction. He later worked for Maytag from 1970 until 1993. In retirement they sold their home, bought a new truck and camper and traveled south in the winter. Robert and Dolores later settled back in their old hometown of Unionville, MO, to finish out their days.

Robert enjoyed having horses, bowling with his son James and son-in-law Bill, and collecting and showing gas engines at Mt. Pleasant, IA, and other shows. He liked to square dance and go for coffee at local restaurants. Robert had a good sense of humor and liked to joke with friends. He had an outgoing personality and seldom met a stranger. Robert belonged to the Odd Fellows and to the Unionville Christian Church.

In addition to his wife of 61 years, Robert is survived by sons Stanley Ray (Dianne) Davis of Unionville, MO, and James E. (Julie) Davis of Ogden, IA, and by daughters Linda Kay Boddicker of Prairie City, IA, and Christina Marie (Delbert) Gilchrist, Newton, IA. Robert is also survived by four grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Dixie Burns of Newton, IA as well as many nieces, nephews, and a large extended family.

Robert was preceded in death by two sons, Bobby Lee and Joseph Davis, a son-in-law, Bill Boddicker, brothers Homer, Glen, and Melvin Davis, and sisters Opal Probasco, Jean Burns, Betty Lea Davis and Lois Nalley.

Funeral services for Robert Davis will be at Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, at 11:00 am Friday, May 6, 2016. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Friends may also pay respects on Thursday with family present from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. Cremation will follow at a later date.

Memorials for Robert Davis are suggested to the American Legion Post #34 in Unionville, MO, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and may be entrusted with Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.
