Nedra May James, 94, of Kirksville passed away Friday, May 22, 2009 at Twin Pines Adult Care Center in Kirksville.
She was born March 16, 1915 in rural Novinger, Missouri, the daughter of Cora A. and Henrietta E. (Vanlaningham) Shafer. On August 10, 1935 in Kirksville she was united in marriage to Clifford A. James who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, Pearl James, two sons, Bill and Jerry James, one granddaughter, Mickey Stewart, three brothers, Dee, Charles, and Orville Shafer, and two sisters, Nettie Young and Neilson Houghtaling.
She is survived by two daughters, Cora Etta Lawson of Kirksville and Martha Bassett and husband, Jerry of Gallatin, MO; one daughter-in-law, Alfreda James of Kirksville; one sister-in-law, Evalea Shafer, of Kirksville; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Nedra was reared in western Adair County where she received her education at the West Center Rural School and graduated from Novinger High School. Following her marriage, she devoted her life to being a wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed making quilts and doll quilts for her family, embroidering, walking, traveling, and watching the sunset. She was a member of the Yarrow Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home with Virgil K. Jones officiating. Special musical selections were “In the Garden” and “Beyond the Sunset”. Burial was in the Lutz Cemetery in western Adair County.
Pallbearers were Gerald James, David Lawson, Ben Lawson, Roger James, Chuck Cox, and Ronnie Shafer.
