Maxine Shafer

Maxine Shafer, 87 of Kirksville was called home on Friday, June 3, 2016.

Maxine was the seventh child born to Nelson and Clara Snyder, on May 26, 1929 outside of Green Castle, MO.

She married Don Shafer on December 25th 1949 and to this union five sons were born. Don served in the USN and then later worked for the phone company. For several years they lived in many locations in Colorado, California and Missouri until finally settling on the Shafer & Vanlaningham farm near Youngstown, south of Novinger, MO, to raise their boys. Maxine was very proud of the farm and raising cattle. She was a board member of the Lutz Cemetery for over fifty years. She worked several years for local retail businesses before becoming a certified nutritionist and operating her own health food store, Maxine’s Back To Nature, for thirty years until retiring in 2015.

Maxine enjoyed travel, painting, gardening and reading.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nelson and Clara Snyder; eight of her siblings, Gladys Santarelli, Pearlie Snyder, Ellen Billington, Ira Snyder, Ramah Billington, Doris Albertson, Laura Mae Weidenkofer, and James Snyder; her husband, Don Shafer; and a grandson, Jacob Shafer.

Maxine is survived by five sons, Daryl Shafer, Daran Shafer, DeVan Shafer, Donovan Shafer and Danny Shafer; eight grandchildren, Slade Shafer, Cory Shafer, Derek Shafer, Brandon Shafer, Brittany Martz, Jessica Shafer, Kristen Scott and Mae Scott along with sixteen great grandchildren; one sister, Orvilla Phipps; brother-in-law, Kevin Weidenkofer and many nieces and nephews.

Maxine will be cremated and a visitation with the family will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday (July 1, 2016) at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home.
