Ruby Hazel (Bowers) Vail, age 101 of Kirksville passed away Thursday (May 28, 2009) at Kirksville Manor Care.
Hazel was born December 26, 1907 in Novinger, Missouri to Eva Lena (Hanlin) and John Ruben Bowers.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Alta Marie (Bowers) Stout and Opal Pearl (Bowers) Moyer, and four brothers, Ora Edward Bowers, Johnny Ray Bowers, Willard Marion Bowers, and Harold Elsworth Bowers.
Hazel is survived by one sister, Esther (Bowers) Conley who resides with her daughter in Independence, MO; two brothers, Alva Ellis Bowers and Ivan Leon Bowers, both of Kirksville; and many loving nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Hazel grew up on a farm in the Kirksville/Novinger area, leaving home at the age of 16 to seek employment. She was soon hired by the Shoe Factory in Kirksville and worked there until she retired in 1972. She was married to James Vail in 1932, also of Kirksville, who preceded her in death in 1959. Mr. Vail was an active member in the Masonic Lodge.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Kirksville.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday (June 1, 2009) at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home with Reverend John Dungan officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hills Cemetery in Kirksville.
Pallbearers will be Gary Bowers, Craig Bowers, Jim Bowers, Chris Bowers, Josh Bowers and Larry Bowers.
Visitation with the family will held prior to the service from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m. on Monday at the
Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home

The family would like to extend a special Thank You to the staff of the Residential Care Facility for their many years of loving care to Hazel and to Kirksville Manor Care for there loving care since Hazel moved there on April 21, 2009.
