John William Winslow, 88, of Kirksville, Missouri, died Saturday June 25, 2016 at Twin Pines Adult Care Center.
John was born in Sperry, Missouri on July 6, 1927 the son of Ira and Alta (VanWye) Winslow. He attended Sperry School and graduated from Kirksville Senior High in 1945. Following graduation, John joined the US Navy serving in the Pacific on a munitions ship until he was honorably discharged in May 1946.
Upon returning to Kirksville, John continued to look after the family farm. He invested in a milk route, later adding another route and undertaking custom combining and later corn picking. In 1948 he married Nola Fay Klingsmith and they had three children. The couple divorced in 1975.
John always loved being outdoors and part of the rural community. In addition to his farming activities he worked for many years for Weber's Garage driving a school bus in the rural area. In the 1960s he started working for Moorman Mfg out of Quincy, Illinois starting as a salesman and advancing to district manager until his retirement in 1986. He co-owned and operated G&W Package Store and following retirement worked with the Waymans in farming, assisted Jim Fohn at his funeral home and delivered flowers for Taylors Flowers.
Throughout his life he enjoyed outdoor activities of farming, hunting and trap shooting. He enjoyed travelling, visiting family throughout the country with two drives to Alaska on the Al-Can Highway and trips to Scotland. He was a keen pool player and card player and enjoyed regular trips to casinos. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #105 A.F. & A.M., where he was Master in 1970, served as secretary 8 years and received his 50 year pin in 2014.
John was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Raymond Winslow; and sisters, Louise Bradshaw, Eileen Rowe, and Dorothy Winslow. He lost his long time companion Jean Baily in August 2012. He is survived by daughters, Kathy (Fritz) and husband Bill Godfrey of Powersville, Missouri and Deb and husband Bill Elliot of South Lanarkshire, Scotland; son, Jerry of Kirksville; sister, Margaret Groff of Kirksville and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday (June 30, 2016) at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home with Reverend Alan Coonfield officiating. Entombment will be in Park View Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be Bill Godfrey, Jerry Winslow, Kevin Groff, Mike Groff, Bob Hardwick, and Kevin Selby.
Visitation will be from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Thursday at the
Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer funeral Home
